Bravely I am sharing what I've been up to. First of all, after my class in Saluda, I spent about 90% of my time on ArtScape. That's the fundraiser for my grandson's Montessori charter school. We had the event on November 13-15. I did sell about 5 paintings. Woo Hoo! Returned unsold art to Savannah on Tuesday the 17th and my brother came down from NY the next day. On the 18th we went on a road trip to Asheville NC. We came back to Beaufort the next night. What a great trip! We walked all over Asheville and stayed at a wonderful hotel downtown. Needless to say I collapsed for about a week after that.

While we were there I got to see some wonderful artists in their studios. One was full of paintings using oil paints and cold wax medium. I fell in love wth the paintings and after I returned home I bought a couple of oil paints and some of the medium.

So - I've finally reentered my messy studio and I've been playing!!! This is not a piece I'm crazy about, but it's a first try with oils and cold wax medium. The cold wax gives the paint a wonderful matte finish and allows for all kinds of texture. I created this small piece on an old canvas. It's small - maybe 4 x 5". The under painting was done in acrylics. As I said - no masterpiece - but a start. And I haven't played with anything new - or anything at all - in quite a while. So I'm hoping I can start to blog again more regularly and continue to experiment.

I am linking to Paint Party Friday. Hope you get a chance to visit all the artists who participate there. Have a wonderful, creative weekend. Having a lot trouble moving pictures around with my iPad. Eventually I'll get it. The 4 pictures on the left are mixed media on reclaimed wood. They are for an silent auction we are having at my church in 2 weeks. The paintings are about 2 feet long by 5" wide. Our logo is a sailboat and that's why I painted the top painting. Underneath it is a detail picture. The angel and her detail are below. It's been a bit crazy here and next week I leave on Wednesday for a 5day art class in Saluda, NC with Gillian Lee Smith. She's coming all the way from Scotland and I am really excited. Needless to say I wanted to finish these paintings before I leave. I am linking to Paint Party Friday. Eva and Kristin have been faithfully maintaining this site for over 5 years now. Go visit and see all the wonderful artwork. Thanks so much for visiting. I've been a very erratic blogger recently and I so appreciate your visit. Have a blessed and creative weekend.
I finally finished this piece. It's based on a photo of downtown Beaufort, SC which is where I live. It's a real mixed media piece including paint, collage, ink, and charcoal on canvas. I worked quite a while till I was pleased with how it looked. I haven't been in the studio as much as I wanted to be so I was glad to complete this painting.

Didn't get a lot done this week but I am trying to keep up with the 29 Faces challenge. You can check it out and participate by clicking on the button on my page. My goal is first of all to keep up with the challenge. I've never been able to do that. I am limiting myself to no more than 30 minutes for the sketch and the next day I create an abstract version of the sketch. I sketch and create shadows in pencil and go back over the outlines in pen just so they are easier to see in photos. Keeping it simple

Glad you stopped by today. I am joining in with Paint Party Friday. Eva and Kristen have been faithfully maintaining this site for 5 years now. Go and visit and see a wide variety of wonderful artwork. Have a blessed and creative weekend.
Patience Brewster had noticed my art online. Patience is an artist who creates lovely whimsical ornaments. You can visit her website to view her ornaments. August was Artist Appreciation Month and Patience asked the question "which artist or artists most inspire you in creating your art?"

I have only been painting for about 4 1/2 years. I've learned a lot during that time through classes (both live and online) and connecting with other artists. The list of those who inspire me is long, but I've managed to narrow it down to the top 4. Two are living artists - Robert Burridge and Carol Nelson. They both create abstract mixed media work, but have completely different styles. Two non-living artists who inspire me are Vincent Van Gogh and Henri Matisse. I love their use of color and texture. I love Matisse's bold use of color and form.

Just so I can include a photo-(doesn't seem complete without one) I've been playing with different photo editors on my IPad. I created a very simple collage with one and here it is

What photo editing software do you use on your Apple device? Thanks for stopping by.
That's my question. Every week I intend to post and something comes up. Haven't had as much studio time as I would like but I have been working on some projects. 2 of them are more craft items and I have no pics of them yet. Sometimes I just have to glue and nail things to clear my foggy brain.

That said I have 2 works to share. I have been wanting to paint some abstract faces. This lady was my first successful attempt. I really like her but haven't come up with a name yet. The other collage/painting is my interpretation of a photo of downtown Beaufort, SC. I never thought I would get to live in such a beautiful place. I love it here and y'all need to come and visit.

This has been my most erratic posting summer. Life gets in the way of fun sometimes. I hope to do this more regularly in the future. So thank you for coming to visit when I post. I don't always get to answer the comments but they all mean so much to me.

I'm sharing this post with Paint Party Friday. If you have some time go visit the Friday "art show". You won't be disappointed. Have a wonderful creative and blessed weekend.
I struggled with this one - really with the eyes. Once I added that contrasting pale yellow stripe, it all came together. He is a mixed media piece using collage, paint, Pan Pastels, and ink. He will have a gloss finishing varnish. I haven't thought of a name for him yet - any ideas?

This summer has been busier than I thought it would be. So I haven't gotten a lot of connected studio time. Just bits and pieces here and there. I really need some play time to get the inspirational juices flowing again. Also I'm trying to reassess how I sell my art. I need to enlarge my audience. I'm thinking a FB store but don't know much about it. Let me know what your experiences have been with on-line selling. I have done Etsy - but there are about 70 or 80,000 mixed media artists out there. Takes a lot of work and time to get any kind of following. I did put some of my work on Fine Art America - but right now I just wanted to create a couple of tote bags to see how they look.

Thanks so much for visiting today. I will be linking tomorrow (friday) morning to Paint Party Friday. Eva and Kristin faithfully administer this site and you can find a veritable smorgasbord of art there. Go and check it out - and maybe submit your own art there. There are no requirements for submission and you will find wonderfully encouraging people out there. Have a blessed and art filled weekend.
Ha Ha - just realized I posted the rhino first with that header. He looks way better than my selfies!!! It's been extraordinarily hot here in Beaufort SC. In the high 90's for the past 2 weeks. Even for Beaufort that is very hot! But no, I haven't melted. I just have had very little time to make art and less time to post it. My grandson is out of school for the summer and camp for him starts next week. That means arranging many play dates and sleepovers. I was on a mission trip with 6 folks from my church in Jonesville, VA. I learned how to dig a drainage ditch (in rock hard clay) and how fascia board is put up on a roof line.

Now I'm home and pretty well recovered so I took some time for art even though my grandson had 2 friends over for a sleepover last night. He came to me yesterday and thanked me for making all those play dates. What a sweetie!

The fun, collage and painted rhino was my first "painting" in a while. Took some time to get the colors right - I wish I painted animals that people actually had as pets. No one has ever asked me to paint their pet rhino! For some reason, they just call out to me. And they are horribly endangered animals.

Practicing a bit on faces. I take the worst selfies in the world - not a technical problem but a facial one. There are many things wrong with this attempt - but the scary thing is it looks better than the photo. Apparently my nose is growing and my face is shrinking - so soon when you look at me you will only see a nose! This pose had my face tilted slightly downward - so my nose looks even bigger - LOL

Anyway - good to get into my studio again. I will be sharing this work on Paint Party Friday. It's astonishing to me that I haven't even posted here since May 1st. April and May were not good months. But I am glad to be back and hope I can continue to get some studio time. I really missed painting. Thanks for visiting here - and go take a fun trip over to Paint Party Friday to check out all the beautiful work. It's in it's 5th year now due to the hard work of Eva and Kristin who run the site.

It's been a busy time. My wonderful grandson is now 10 years old and we spent a long weekend in Florida celebrating.

Friends came and we spent a day in Legoland and some time just hanging out.

I got some work done this week - no painting, but some "stuff".

The treasure bottle was started on a day I was feeling cranky. I had covered the bottle in vintage paper - but I don't do vintage well. So - I started over with brighter paper. And then decided to make it ugly to fit my mood. However, I started having fun, gluing on all the crazy things I had saved over the years. It's a work in progress - and it's just for me! I got 2 more gourd birds done - a very small one and a much larger one. I have sold 2 of the bunch I made before!

Below is a portrait I did - using Pam Carriker's Mixed Media Portraits. I am using source portraits because I really want to see what I see when looking at a face. The Pan Pastel coloring was a bit haphazard - but aside from that - I am pleased. I am linking to Paint Party Friday as usual - thanks to Eva and Kristen for their work in keeping the site going. Thanks so much for visiting - have a blessed and art filled weekend.
So - another bird - a bit obsessed aren't I? So much fun to make - I have more in the works. I also bought Pam Carriker's new book Mixed Media Portraits. I haven't done much drawing in a while - and hardly any faces at all. I love to do them - just wasn't feeling like I could get to it. I actually had at least 5 preliminary sketches before the final one. They were hard to photograph because some were so light. I wasn't going for an exact copy - but to kind of capture that whimsical look on the girl's face. I used Pam's face mapping (which really helps and is pretty easy). I am pleased with this portrait - on to some others.
I wanted a new coffee table and I love that industrial look - but they are expensive. Well I happened to have this rustic old cabinet just lying around waiting to be used again. Made my own chalk paint from sample paint I had lying around. The only big expense was the oversized industrial wheels ($100 on ebay). They are missing a little xtra decorative hardware but other than that they are done. I used dark paste wax as a finish on the sides and on the red panels and natural paste was on the rest. Love the pop of color it gives to my living room full of brown furniture.

The 3 birds are made from gourds I had dried a couple of years ago. Used old hardware. grunge paper, swarovski crystals, driftwood and a lot of "stuff" to make the nests. Not sure if I will sell them or keep them but I will make more anyway. So much fun to do!
Here is my work for this week! I had a lot of fun painting this 8x10" cityscape. No actual perspective here!!! LOL Very textured and full of color - the reflections are a little hard to see in this picture - but they are on the bottom where the city folks are.

I have had a number of dried gourds from fall decorations for a few years. My idea was to make birds of them. So after 4 years I finally made one. I am usually terrible at steampunk stuff - but I found a tool case of my father-in-law (bottom left) and pulled out a bunch of interesting rusted washers, screws and even a tiny old rusted spring (on the bird's head). He will be sitting on the old spindle (after I paint it) and I will sccure it to something else so it doesn't topple over and he's going to live on my covered porch - hopefully I will be able to create some buddies for him soon.

The painting will be mounted on a wood board and in the local gallery where my other work is.

So - a mildly productive week - I just got Pam Carriker's new book - Mixed Media Portraits (wonderful book) and hope to start sketching faces again soon. Haven't done much of that this year.
I finished this rooster this week. Not sure how I feel about him yet. He is collage, acrylic paint and Pan Pastels on cradled wood (8' x 8"). I am still experimenting with color, contrast and composition and trying not to be discouraged when a work is less than exciting. I am giving him a high gloss tar gel finish- just because. It's hard to tell here but he is extremely glossy and that brings out his colors a bit more.

I am working in fits and starts - some of the fits are lying on my studio floor - need to think about them. I started 2 new paintings today. Too early to tell. They are in the adolescent stage - hard to tell what they will be.

Trying to keep the brush moving - Overflowing is a painting I started several weeks ago - definitely meant to be abstract in the flower department. This was my first foray into limited color and black and white. The sides need to be painted and then I am done. Not sure what I am planning to do with this picture. I could hold it for a while and put it in the fall show I was part of last year - we'll see. All in all - I am pleased with how the painting turned out - not easy to see but the vase is collaged with dictionary paper; then I painted white, used some charcoal and finally sanded the vase so more of the paper showed.

The WIP is just that - not sure if it will be salvaged or become collage fodder. I'll have to see how it goes. I like the idea - just not sure I like how it's executed.
It's been a bit of a struggle refocusing - I wasn't sure where I should be - ever have that feeling? I was focusing more on subject inspiration (which is fine if you know how to approach a subject) and less on my technique. Composition, Color. Contrast. Those were the 3 C's I took in from my class with Bob Burridge in November. I must have put them away somewhere while I dealt with the mild chaos of Christmas and my husband heading off to Bolivia soon after.

So - I played a bit. Some of it was pretty nasty - but then I started to collage and use a limited pallette and here's where I ended up. Not the end of my art journey - but definitely a big step forward. I wanted "still life" paintings that jumped off the painting. These were a good start. We all have our own path to follow - but I have been influenced by so many amazing artists - most of which I first discovered online. I feel like I am standing on more solid ground artistically (for me) and will inch forward to see where this goes.

Thanks for visiting - I feel like I've abandoned all of you, but that wasn't what the plan was. I guess I just needed to withdraw to come back out and go forward. Go forth and travel on your path - I wish you all a blessed journey!
This was a busy 3 months. I realized I hadn't updated here at all. First - worked on the art benefit for my grandson's school. That took about 3 weeks of my life - lots of fun and lots of work. Not only did I have fun - I sold 3 of my paintings - woo hoo!!! Right after that my youngest brother came to visit for about 5 days. We went to Charleston and Savannah and hung around Beaufort as well. A week and a half later I went to Art of the Carolinas in Raleigh, NC and took a wonderful figure drawing class with Bob Burridge. All I can say about that is wow - changed my whole outlook. We were away for about 4 days - on the way back stopped in Charlotte at Ikea to get carts for my studio and dressers for my bedroom.

When I get a chance I have been mostly playing in my studio. I am not looking to sell anything right now because that changes my whole attitude about creating. This guy is painted on watercolor paper. I made so many changes to the background that I feel like the paper is about 1/2" thick now with layers of paint. I am far from really loose in my work - but I loosened up a bit with this guy. He is acrylic paint, some collage and white charcoal (aka chalk). I am going to mount him on a piece of wood and hang him up at home for now. He only needs some type of finish.

No pictures right now - but I have played with some of the figure drawings and paintings I did in class. I smiled all the way through Bob's class in Raleigh. It was so much fun and I learned a lot about using color and contrast - not through any lecturing but through doing it with guidance. I hope to take more classes next year - we will see what happens by then.
This is the story of 5 little impasto paintings and how they grew. I had this impasto paste from Matisse that came with a set of acrylic paints. I love texture and impasto looked like it would be so much fun! Well - it was. The paintings are on small pieces of birch (about 3.75x4.5") I know that's an odd size - but I cut the wood myself - LOL

I'm still not as free in my painting as I would like to be - but it was a real experience using a pallet knife for all 5 paintings. We have an art sale that benefits my grandson's school at the end of October and I wanted some seasonal (fall and winter) pieces. I did all 5 over about 3 days. They are meant to be displayed on a small stand.

So - what do you think? Even if you are not into texture this is a great way to loosen up. I will definitely make more of these. Thanks so much for visiting. My finished collage / painting of the seagull is on the right. He has flown away to a new home. I added a verse (part of a verse) from Joshua 1:9. As you probably know - seagulls really are rarely along - this guy seems to be but you can bet there are plenty of other gulls around on the beach. I used my new scrunchy wiry brush to get all that paint texture. Best $2.99 purchase I have made in a while! I have other works in the "works" - will hopefully get to post on those next week.
Thus the sporadic blogging. But I have been at work. The studio is very often my sane space - even though it's quite a mess right now.

My grandson's Montessori charter school has an art benefit in October.
These colorful and whimsical little paintings are really the 4 sides of an old wooden box that contained Montessori materials. On the very bottom is another box that I painted by using masking tape. Both are acrylic paints and acrylic Silk paints. The WIP I started yesterday. It's mixed media with collage and acrylic paint. Top right is a 16 x 20" acrylic painting on a birch board. That painting and the boxes (which will have tops and feet) are going to be some of my entries in the art benefit.

Thanks so much for visiting - I am linking to Paint Party Friday - it's a wonderful venue for artist's to share their art with others - big thanks to Eva and Kristin for hosting faithfully. Go and take a look at some wonderful work by talented artists. Have a blessed and creative day.
In an effort to bring a looser and more textured look to my paintings, I have been experimenting a bit. Showing more brushstrokes and just in general being freer with my brush. I still need to get more arm involvement and control the brush less with my hand. I am not finished with her yet - she is going to a new home when I am done. I painted this angel on a piece of scrap birch (actually painted on the "bad" side of the wood without realizing - but just a bit more texture LOL) I can see a bit more work to do - but I think she will be finished today. She has a lot of sparkle to her - hard to show in a photo.

So - what do you think? I can take it!!! LOL. Thanks for visiting with me today and have a blessed and creative day.bellefrogworkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10668462382521292679noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9059017169094484216.post-57769742123338505002014-08-29T05:19:00.000-07:002014-08-29T05:19:07.178-07:00I'm still here!

I haven't been able to post for a couple of weeks. I only got a small amount of art time and I was very busy helping to get my grandson's new Montessori charter school ready for opening day. It opened this past Monday and it's a wonderful place. Very thankful that he is able to get this free Montessori education.

My last post was of the cityscape I had done-but it was brought to my attention that it was missing an entry or focal point into the painting. I so very rarely paint scenes that I had forgotten about that. So I painted over and many layers and sandings later I ended up with this painting. It's called "City View". Originally I was going to paint streets, but they turned into a corner window. It felt very free to paint this way - it's a big painting (for me) on a piece of wood that's 2' x 3'. I have learned to paint for myself - I can't paint for anyone else. That gives me the freedom to accept constructive critiques without flinching. If no one else wants to hang it on their wall - I have just the spot on mine!

Still working on my jaguar at the scratching post - accidentally smeared dark paint on the poor kitty so had to repaint and make his spots all over again. In the meantime - decided to go a bit looser and more abstract - and do something I've wanted to try for a while - a cityscape. It's also a bit larger than I usually work - I think about 18" x 24". I need some more brightness but it is more bright than the photo. Now to finish it without overworking the poor thing. I have been very inspired by Nat Kalbach and her building paintings - I have a ways to go before I paint anything as colorful and wonderful as her buildings. You can see her work here.

On the right is a beautiful, hand painted card from Faye Holland - She was sweet enough to send it even though I didn't win her give away. I will definitely find a small frame and a perfect spot for it. I love to fill my home with art of all kinds! Didn't make it to Paint Party Friday this week - but that doesn't mean I won't go and visit to see some gorgeous and inspiring art. You can visit too-right here. Thanks so much for stopping by - have a blessed and creative day!
My "baby" brother asked if I would paint a jaguar as part of my "endangered" series and I started it this week. I love that he is at a giant scratching post - kitties big and small, domesticated and wild share so many characteristics. On the right is a lovely birthday card - sorry I took so long to post this - from my friend and former recruit for Stampin' UP! Former in that I am no longer a demonstrator. You can see her beautiful work here. The last image below is of my dangerous cranky diva - our Boston Terrier. We rescued her 3.5 years ago and she is a pip! A definite personality and keeps me laughing with her craziness! And she is fierce - if anything bigger than her approaches when we are walking - she is a beast to be contended with. In the house - not so much! Thanks for visiting me today - I am linking to Paint Party Friday. Go over and visit this fabulous collection of artists from around the world. Have a blessed and creative day.
My finished baby rhino - I used acrylic paints, oil pastels, charcoal and Pan Pastels. Maybe you're not supposed to use the oil pastels with acrylic paint - I never learned all the rules. I have named the painting "are we there yet?" The top photo is truer to the color than the close-up which looks a little washed out. The angel below was a paint over (like a do over) and her face and body seemed to just appear - so here she is. Acrylic paint, Pan Pastels and charcoal. Don't have a name for her yet. Can you think of one?
