29 Faces in September - Days 17 and 18

No - I haven't given up!  I've just had very little time to take photos and post.  I have more faces I haven't taken pictures of yet.  I will finish.  This have been a great opportunity to practice different styles.  Day 17 was just a quick sketch - messed up the skin a bit but otherwise I quite like it.  It's not stiff and lacking in expression.  My male portrait on the other hand - although I captured the features - I didn't capture any feeling. It's actually on white paper but I took the photo at night and the lighting wasn't great.  His shoulders should be broader - but that's what practice is for.  Thanks for stopping by and have a blessed art filled day.

29 Faces in September - Day 16

I spent a little time today on a Modiglianesque (say that 3 times fast without swallowing your tongue!) lady.  I love his portraits with their elongated faces and necks and he puts so much character into them as well.  This is a slightly better shot at my version than the slightly masculine lady from yesterday. I am using some of my time during September using famous artists as inspiration.  I found out that exaggerated features are much harder to do than realistic ones!  Thanks for stopping by - I'm still a day behind but should catch up tomorrow.  Have a blessed and art filled day.

It may seem as if I pulled a disappearing act - but I was away for a few days last week.  I continued to play with faces - but had no opportunity to post.  Quick descriptive comments:

day 15 -  Another little lady on an ATC - If you enlarge her you will see the tiny swarovski crystals on her headband.

day 14 - was admiring Modigliani's work and decided to (unsuccessfully) try to paint a lady in that style.  What I got was a Grant Wood caricature of a Grant Wood painting.  Oh well - I'll try again.

day 13 - a face I started long ago and found in my sketchbook less than half done.  I finished the hair and put in the features (fairly funky features if I do say so) and applied some Pan Pastels.

day 12 - saw this child's picture in a newspaper when I was away.  I really need work on young children's faces and I actually tore out the picture but lost it.  I didn't quite finish the mouth but it was a pretty good likeness (you'll have to take my word for it)

day 11, 10 - my grandson was watching Pokemon on TV and I decided to quick sketch the faces I saw to see what made them work (show emotion, etc).  Finished the coloring and hair over the next 2 days.

day 9 - the day before VBS started this past summer, I was asked to create a life-size Jesus for the program.  Well, needless to say, it was a real rush job.  It was hung high up on a wall but after VBS was done my friend said he wanted to hang it in the children's area.  I took it home against his protests (it looks fine) to just fix up a bit - his skin was pretty green and his mouth was completely wrong. Hanging in on a low wall - well I didn't want him to scare the wee ones.  Not nearly complete in my eyes but not scary and I didn't feel like starting over.

29 Days of Faces - Days 7 & 8

Trying my best to keep up.  So - grabbed the arts & leisure section of the Sunday Times - and fairly quickly drew these 2.  Far from completely satisfied with face shapes and angles - but I stopped myself from attempting to be perfect (a frustrating venture).  This is a great exercise - especially since I am drawing both men and women and using photos as well as imaginary faces. This will be a difficult week to post - so I may have to post several days at the end of the week.  But I will keep on keeping on.  If you go here you can view some fabulous art. 29 Days of Faces September - Day 6

I'm just on time today.  I have used this challenge to move myself along with my little woman paintings.  They are all done on ATC's (artist trading cards - 2.5 x 3.5) and the hair is collaged with vintage dictionary pages.   It does take a bit of practice to work in such a small space - but I think I am learning control and getting much more drawing in.  The background on this one was done with a couple of colors of Twinks (twinkling H2O's a shimmery waterpaint in a pot).  I am also linking to Paint Party Friday since I hate to miss a week and it is after all Friday!!!  PPF is hosted by the wonderful Eva and Kristin.  29 Faces is being hosted by the equally wonderful Martha of AyalaArt here.  Stop by both of these sites and see some absolutely gorgeous art.  Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful art filled weekend.

29 Faces in September - Days 4 and 5

Day 4

 The sketch of the boy is one I did of my grandson without a reference.  He lives with me so I see him every day and I wanted to see how much memory could be translated from head to hand holding a pencil.  Far from exact - but I am pleased that I was able to catch as much of a likeness as I did.

Bottom are sketches I did today waiting for my husband in the opthamologist's  eye doctor's office.   They will be used for more of my ATC little women.  Hope to get more done tomorrow.  Thanks so much for stopping by.  I do appreciate your comments so much - I have tried to get rid of google+ so you could all comment - I detached my blog from it but apparently it's sticking in there somehow.

29 Days of Faces September 2013 - Day 3

I have been working on these little women for a while now and plan to sell them from a gallery in town as well as Etsy. I realize after posting that her eyes need a little work - they give her the look of a cross-eyed devil.  Aside from that minor flaw (LOL) she's done.  I've been getting inspiration from magazines and from people I know.  They all have hair collaged from vintage dictionary pages and a light coat of titanium white.  They also all have a jewel - those in profile get a swarovski earring and those in full face get a necklace. I will try to post later another sketch I made today - if not - then tomorrow am.  Thanks for stopping by.

29 Faces September 2013 - Day 2 (a day late!!!)

Decided to stop ignoring the guys.  This took a bit longer - I only worked in pencil - hope its not too light to see.  This guy is someone (LOL - aren't we all) but I don't remember who.  He was in a special NY Times supplement.  Not satisfied with the angle or the shape of the face (too round!) but not horrible.  Most of my faces are female and most are just "inspired" by faces but are not even meant to be portraits of someone real.  I will be posting Day 3 later today.  Just a busy day yesterday.  Thanks for stopping by.

29 Faces in September - Day 1

I have been very focused on faces (as my DH says - I've left out half the human race - mostly female faces).  So what excuse could I have for not participating in Martha's 29 Faces challenge???  NONE of course.  However, I'm going to let this challenge be a little different.  I'm not trying to get it right - inspired by Jane Davenport's short Cloth Paper Scissors lesson - I'm going to have some fun and make these faces a daily quick exercise.  No pressure - no having to spend hours on perfection (LOL - as if I ever achieve that!!).  So here is day1 - the plant whisperer.  Pen, PanPastels, and a bit of Copic marker.  You can follow (or even better join in) here - Go check out all the wonderful artists.  Faces seem scary at first - maybe I'll show you some of the faces I did about a year ago (I definitely see some improvement).  There are so many wonderful tutorials and on line classes to help and give you confidence.  God's design and architecture is so apparent in the human face - I find it fascinating.
