Waxing and waning

I am the queen of tools - my husband doesn't despair that I will go out and spend hundreds on clothing or shoes (I live in the land of flip-flops not - so not a problem).  I love handbags - but don't get to the handbag store much these days.  However, I love to buy art tools and supplies.  So - I have a bunch of encaustic supplies - which I haven't used in a very long time.  This week I textured (with die cuts and gesso) and painted this small canvas.  Then I sketched the small turtle on watercolor paper - cut out and painted and collaged.  Last night - I got out the wax!!!  My love for this piece really waned after I brushed wax all over it.  However, this morning my love for it "waxed" a bit - when I took another look. There is a definite learning curve with encaustic - I took a class once - love the texture just have to work on technique.  Let me know what you think - I appreciate your comments.  See - I have been busy this week - just haven't posted much!!!  I think I will call this - "Carrying the weight of the world" - trying not to do that myself.  Thanks so much for stopping by.

  1. Firstly, I wish I also lived in the land of the flip flop (where is that by the way?) instead of the land of wear boots even in August because as soon as you bare your feet, they WILL get wet in the next rain shower! I like this piece very much and funny enough the last blog I just hopped over from also had an encaustic piece which I really don't know anything about but I like the effect and that's a great title for your piece too!

    1. Beaufort, SC - originally from NYC area, so I really appreciate the lovely climate (as long as you don't mind summer heat). Thanks for the comment!

  3. I am not an expert on wax at all, I have just seen techniques so i have nothing to say besides I like the colors, looks sweet and yes, crafty tools rate better than shoes here too! :oD

If you wonder why you don't get more comments is because of the "captcha", it has a glitch that hides in under a window... really hard to get to it, what were they thinking when they made that change?? :o(

    1. I think I turned the "captcha" off - I say that because sometimes I change things and they don't change!! Thanks for the comment and the info.

  4. I, too, am addicted to buying art supplies and have quite a stash, but I have to say that now whenever I'm inspired, I usually have what I need to make the idea a reality. It is just so fun to delve into the cupboard looking for something to work with. What I find can also be inspiring even if it isn't exactly what I'm looking for.

However encaustic equipment is not amongst those supplies, and I have zero experience with it. I admire anyone willing to use hot stuff in their art, so yeah, wow, great going :D

    Best wishes,
    Liz
