she dreams of flight

She dreams of flight

This was my WIP of about 2 weeks ago.  I showed it to a friend of mine and she told me what I do is "outsider art" (maybe I got that wrong)  She loved it by the way.  Anyway at least I have something to call my slightly bizarro style!!!

She was painted over an old painting that just didn't work - thus all the texture in the balloon.  I just used map stencils along with old atlas pages on her face and other stencils in the balloon background.  The map stencils on her face were sprayed with Liquitex white spray paint - I just love it because if you spray lightly you get this slightly ghostly coverage.  I am proud of the ears because they look like ears - LOL!  The balloon showed up first and the idea of the flying lady head just came to me as I was looking at the painting.

I am linking to Jenn Mclean's Artist Play Room (here) - the theme was the word bizarre - thought this painting fit the bill.  I am also linking to Paint Party Friday (here) hosted by the fabulous Eva and Kristin.  Check both of these sites to see the fantastic art posted there - better yet join in yourself on this or the next round.  Thanks so much for stopping by and have a blessed, art-filled weekend.

    2. Yes, it looks great! Liquitex spray paint is fun to use with stencils...and I like that it is low odor. :)

    3. And I love the way you collaged the maps onto the substrate, too! :)

    1. It's only mildly bizarre - I agree. I don't like to do dark paintings (as in very dark and not in color) but I really tend towards the slightly bizarre! Thanks for the comment!

  4. While it is a bit bizarre and that really isn't my "thing", I really like this. The old painting texture gives it a lot of character. I think you paint not only ears but the whole head with a great deal of expertise. Gorgeous face.

    1. Thank so much Faye - I am working on my faces and I know this one has very exaggerated eyes, that was somewhat on purpose because the poor thing is bald you see.

  6. I love it! It seems to convey so much...to me the fact that you used maps and balloon and the floating head is very meaningful. I can see my thoughts floating over regions on maps that I have never visited...

    1. Thank you so much Christine - the one thing I learned painting this was to be true to my own vision - I was a bit nervous painting this - but it's what I saw.
