A pair of pears

My watercolor image
Original Image
Okay - I agree - far from a perfect rendering.  I am stubbornly fighting my watercolor phobia - so I decided to enter the pear challenge in the Artist Play Room.

I would display the button if I knew how in dynamic views on Blogger - can't figure out if there is a way!

I sketched the pear in pencil and then used Derwent Inktense pencils to give it some base color.  I used water to spread out the pencil a bit.  Then I bravely used several colors of Twinks to color over that.  Even more bravely I used Twinks to create the shadows (another area of  non expertise and fear)  I used a .005 Micron pen to outline and create the "dots".  Not great - but better than  my other tries at watercoloring.  So I feel ok about this.  Thanks for stopping by - I will link up the APR.  I appreciate all comments - so feel free!!

  3. I really like this. The colors and drawing are so good. Are you taking Dion Dior's Watercolor Pencil Class? I bought some Derwent Inktense Watercolor pencils to use with that class. I haven't used Twinks yet. Keep up the adventure!

    1. I'm not taking the class but I love Dion's art. She inspired me to take out my many Twinks and use them. They definitely count as watercolors and I love the sparkle. By the way - your work is gorgeous!

  5. Watercolours are great fun even if they are really unpredictable.... I kind of like that I never know if it will work... the whole high stakes thing is fun.... mind you this is a great result and you make it look easy and effortless... xx

    1. OK - now you made me laugh - This is probably only the 2nd time I've been brave enough to let the world see something I watercolored. Maybe it is the Twinks - I do love anything that sparkles!!! Thanks for the encouragement.

  6. Now that's how you paint a pear, I love the blended colours. Twinks are fun but I get fed up with waiting for the water to soften the paint, not that I'm impatient (he he).
Keep doing the water colours, you are really good at it.
    Von.

    1. Thanks - I think it's funny. I took one watercolor class-so poorly taught. Everyone else in the class was experienced (didn't have to be for the class) and the teacher ignored me. I left feeling very incompetent and dejected (this was a while ago). So - I appreciate the encouragement. I will keep trying since I love the way watercolors look.

    1. Actually my husband, who usually only comments after being asked, volunteered that he liked my pear. I guess it was my insecurity with watercoloring speaking!! Thanks for the encouraging comment.

  9. Gina, this is a gorgeous pear. You did a fantastic job. Sorry I had trouble finding you. I am not on google + and that is where it took me. Also, am I the only one who couldn't get on Blogger yesterday? Very frustrating, since I could get on other blogs and web sites, just not BLOGGER.

    1. I actually hate Google+ - it hides my blog settings and even when I find them I have trouble changing them. I was on Blogger dashboard yesterday - didn't hear about any problems. Thank you so much for your lovely comment.

  12. Apologies for my late visit Gina...but thank goodness I'm here now because that pear is perfect!
You've done such a brilliant job. I'm realising now how it should be done.
I've only just started to use my intense pencils but each time I do I'm learning so much...and now I realise by looking at your work, that I have sooooooo much more to learn.
I've not got 'Twinks' (yet) but I've heard so much about them and love the effect they give.
I feel my pears are in a state of undress and I think I'm going to carry on with them and play a little more taking your work as inspiration!
    Enjoy your Sunday ;D

    1. No apologies needed - thank you for coming by. I am by no means a wiz with Inktense pencils - although I do love them. The colors, especially when wet, are very vibrant. Most of the color came from the Twinks - I have continued to play with these and have a lot of failures. So - I try to hang in there and continue to learn. It's wonderful to be encouraged - thank you again for your comments.
