My faded flower - PPF

My flower
Copic Markers
Photo

This is a painting of a flower in a bouquet I gave a friend.  The photo is very striking - the painting less so.  However, I stretched myself by using watercolors (twinks) and many other things.  I have a lot of trouble (especially with watercolor) showing light - I know that's because I am used to painting in first and adding light later instead of leaving white space.  I also used some Silk acrylics and some cadmium yellow to recapture some of the light in the flower.  This was probably a difficult piece to paint and normally I would have given up.  I didn't - don't love it (ore even like it a lot) but I haven't painted much lately and it seemed about time.  I also used a new product to outline the petals - Dervan liquid pencil.  Got that on my trip to the new Savannah Dick Blick.  I like how smoothly it paints on and how it can be smudged a bit like charcoal.  Definitely need to do a little research on how to use - but all in all I liked painting with it. Added one more shot at this flower done with Copic markers.  It's late at night and I'm not sure I am happy wit this one either. Maybe it will all look better in the morning.  I am linking this up with http://paintpartyfriday.blogspot.com/  - a bold move on my part since I am not thrilled with the results.  I welcome all your comments and any consolation you might have - LOL.  Thanks for stopping by.

    1. I like the twinks better than other cake watercolors - but I am a seriously anemic watercolorist! Like I tell my 7 yo grandson - you can't get better at anything unless you try! Thanks for stopping by. Happy PPF

  2. I've not tried to really paint with watercolors yet... I don't even know where to begin! I've filled in some space with color, but not truly painted with them. I do think this is very pretty. Hang in there!

    1. If it is your medium - you may just immediately do wonderful things with them - if not there is a "bit" of a learning curve! Thanks for stopping by

  4. I think all of the renditions have an allure. The flower is a lovely one and you did an excellent job with it.

  6. Love the vibrancy of the colours. A stunning flower. I have been wanting to try the liquid graphite. I think I will struggle with leaving the light areas in watercolours, with acrylics I don't have that problem.

    1. With watercolors you have to leave white space - that's a different way of looking at something. With acrylics you can "fill in" the white space later. Thanks for your encouraging comment

  7. I like both your flower renderings. I believe art is about your personal views, tastes, and desires, as well as your personal growth as an artist, so don't dismiss your ability. Blessings!

    1. Thanks for the encouraging comment - You are absolutely right about art - I know I have grown as an artist. Just wrestling with some dissatisfaction!

  8. Very nice work, and you are correct: 'Practice makes perfect' so keep trying-watercolors can be (very) challenging!

    1. That's why it's important to post things I am not super pleased with - Art is not really about perfection anyway - but about "seeing" the world around us in a special way. Sigh - sometimes I do want instant gratification - LOL

    1. I learned to draw a face. The name of the class was Fabolus Faces. Just because you were talking about my faces in your coment at my blog..

    2. I have taken a class (a live one) on drawing faces - also have a wonderful book by Betty Edwards. I may need more classes - but mostly I just need to do it. I love the look of your faces - I am not one who strives for realism (although I do draw myself and family members from time to time). Your faces have a lot of character and interest.

  12. I really love it! The photo is beautiful, but not more so than your painting from the heart! AND I can't wait to try that liquid pencil, I was JUST reading about it and here you've used it! xoxo

    1. Thank you so much Kristin - sometimes I forget about the "heart" part. The liquid pencil is very interesting - very smooth. I need to experiment more with it.
